5e Public Conversion Project

From Lost Mines of Phandelver
Fifth Edition D&D, the 5th 9th at least 11th okayest edition of the world's most popular roleplaying game, leans heavily on the past for a lot of its ideas. In many cases, those past versions were more interesting, but occasionally Wizards of the Coast nailed it. In particular, subclasses feel like the area where writers have been the most creative. Classes are generally too cumbersome to build, races are usually too standard and are undergoing a reevaluation as we speak, feats are sidelined as a design element, and spells aren't very conceptually important, so subclasses are the name of the game. I've even argued that mining the subclasses for ideas for other games might be valuable, and have done so myself recently with the Raven Queen's Psychopomp.

So I asked the OSR Discord if they would be interested in converting their own favorite classes into a more Old School system. Define that as you will:

  • I used OSE for my proof of concept.
  • GLOG classes will almost certainly be popular for this idea.
  • A set of starting items for Knave, in the style of Grave.
  • Troika has a class structure ripe for simple conversions.
It's up to you what system you're converting it to, this is more about highlighting cool stuff than it is about supporting a particular system. So pick something you like, pick an old school system you also like, and do some magic. You've got until the end of November to write it up and post it somewhere.

If you aren't on the discord server, just let me know in the comments below and I'll include your entry in the follow-up post with everyone else's.
